Listed equity capital gains tax estimator

Estimate the rate calculation for one realised gain. For qualifying STT-paid listed shares sold from 23 July 2024, short-term gains generally use 20%; aggregate qualifying long-term gains above ₹1,25,000 per financial year generally use 12.5%. These are base rates before surcharge and cess.

Estimate base tax on one gain

Use the realised gain from your broker statement for a qualifying listed Indian equity share. The calculation stays in your browser.

What this estimate covers

It is for a positive realised gain from one qualifying listed Indian equity-share sale. Classify a share held for 12 months or less as short-term and one held for more than 12 months as long-term. For shares in demat form, matching the sold units to their purchase dates can require FIFO. Confirm the gain, holding period and STT from your broker records.

It does not calculate your ITR, income slab, basic-exemption adjustment, surcharge, 4% health and education cess, losses, grandfathered cost, other exemptions or special investor treatment. It also does not cover mutual funds, derivatives, foreign or unlisted shares, ESOPs, gifts or non-residents. If any of those apply, use the official forms or a tax professional.

The ₹1,25,000 threshold applies to aggregate qualifying long-term gains for a financial year, not to every sale separately. Enter earlier qualifying gains from the same financial year so the estimate uses only the remaining threshold.
